On the 19th of January, a group of Year10, 11 and 12 were lucky enough to take part in the Coed Caerdydd programme in Sanatorium Park. Coed Caerdydd is a 10-year programme aimed at increasing the number of trees in Cardiff. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of trees, and provide opportunities for everyone to help make Cardiff a greener and healthier place to live.
We were given the chance to survey the area’s flora and fauna, as well as identifying the best site for planting an orchard.
In March we will be planting trees; expanding the wet woodland area we surveyed and planting roughly 400 whips (young, small trees). We will also coppice some existing willow and plant the cuttings as part of the session. We will also be working with the local community to plant some fruit trees by the park.
Fitzalan looks forward to being part of the development of Coed Caerdydd over the coming years.
