Minister for Social Justice and Chief Whip, Jane Hutt

Our Fitzalan Roma Band took part in their first performance in the new school site on Wednesday 4th October. Minister for Social Justice and Chief Whip Jane Hutt came into school to speak to our pupils about how we celebrate Roma Culture in our school community as well as to listen to a performance from the group.

The Roma Band performed two pieces for the Minister and visiting guests from Welsh Government in our new Sixth Form area. The first piece performed was ‘Gelem Gelem’, the Roma Anthem, followed by ‘Roma Boys’, a more contemporary pop song.

The minister and our visitors commented on the excellent performances that they heard from our pupils. Representatives from the Roma Band also took part in a Q & A session with Jane Hutt about Roma culture and traditions. Along Miss Davies, Miss Dykes-Swindell and Mr Banon, the pupils spoke about what we do in Fitzalan to promote understanding of the culture as well as events that we hold throughout the year such as International Roma Day celebrations and performances in various concerts throughout the year. We are incredibly proud of our pupils in the band and would like to congratulate them on another excellent performance.

Roma Band is open to all pupils in Fitzalan and rehearse weekly. If any pupils are interested, they can see Miss Davies in the Music Department for more information.
