Dickens Lecture

On Tuesday 06th December 2022, Professor Furneaux from Cardiff University, (and a world leading expert on Charles Dickens - consultant on the BBC series 'Dickensian') ran an exciting and insightful seminar for nearly 100 of our Year 11 pupils about 'A Christmas Carol' and the context surrounding the novella. There was a fantastic discussion surrounding the character of Tiny Tim - a real standout moment for Professor Furneaux, who was impressed by our Year 11s and their insight into the language Dickens uses.

Our pupils were thoroughly engaged, motivated by Professor Furneaux's historical and textual expertise, they shared many of their own initial thoughts about the text, discussed the meaning of Christmas and why this text is still important today. There was a particularly interesting discussion surrounding the links between Christmas and other religious celebrations and how Dickens's message is still important to readers today.

We look forward to more opportunities working alongside Cardiff University and Professor Furneaux in the future, to help further inspire, motivate, and create a greater sense of aspiration within our fantastic pupils, continuing to enrich their learning journey.

Well done Year 11 - and thank you Professor Furneaux & Cardiff University!
