The Year 10 GCSE geographers completed their Fieldwork Enquiry (FE) within the Brecon Beacons National Park on Wednesday 12th June 2024. The pupils visited the Caerfanell River as a physical environment where they collected and recorded data at two different sites, site 1: Upper Blaen y Glyn (Blaen y Glyn Uchaf) and site 2: Lower Blaen y Glyn (Blaen y Glyn Isaf). It was unfortunate that the pupils could not collect data at site 3: Talybont reservoir as rainfall had flooded the site.
A range of fieldwork equipment such as measuring tapes, metre rulers, flowmeters, stop watches, callipers, ranging poles and clinometers were used to measure and record channel width, depth, velocity, size of material, angularity of the slip-off slopes and the height of river cliffs.
The pupils will use the collected data to investigate the significance of the river within the upper course and middle course. After the river study, the pupils visited Crickhowell town as a human environment where they questioned residents, business owners and tourists/visitors to investigate how the town has changed over time.
The pupils will complete their unit 3 Non-Examination Assessment (NEA), which is worth 20% of their final GCSE geography qualification in the Autumn of 2024.
