A number of remembrance activities were held in the run up to Armistice Day this year. The Charity Committee sold poppies and Royal British Legion merchandise and on Friday 8th November we held a whole school Teams assembly to talk about the symbolism of remembrance.
Year 7 wrote messages on card poppies that were then stuck to hessian to add to the poppy cascade that other year groups made last year. These were then put on display.
On Monday 11th November, we held a KS3 assembly and then a KS4 and 5 assembly, where we talked about the importance of remembrance and some of the key anniversaries marked in 2024. We thought about the 110th anniversary of the start of the First World War and 80th anniversary of D Day. Of particular interest, we found out about the significance of the battles of Imphal and Kohima (both 1944). These battles are sometimes over looked, so it was good to show our respect for the bravery of those who fought and those who died.
It was also an opportunity to reflect on the considerable and vital contribution and sacrifice by men from pre-partition India, Burma and West Africa. As a school we also marked the two minute silence at 11am, with readings, a choir, wreath laying and the last post being played.
Thank you everyone involved for making our remembrance activities such meaningful and poignant events, and to our pupils who showed respect and gratitude as a school community.
