Year 7 have been studying the impact of the Roman conquest of Wales in their history lessons and on Friday 22nd November they were given the opportunity to visit the Roman city of Venta Silurum at Caerwent and the fortress of Isca Augusta at Caerleon.
Starting at Caerwent, we looked at the remains of the Roman shops, courtyard houses, forum-basilica and the Romano-British temple. We also looked at some artefacts in the church and walked around the impressive Roman walls. All the while, the pupils were attempting to imagine and visualise what Roman Caerwent would have been like and how different it was from the Iron Age.
We then moved on to Caerleon where we ate our lunch in the sunshine, before looking at the remains of the Roman barracks and heading to the museum. The pupils were fascinated by the exhibits in the Roman Legionary Museum and had lots of questions for the museum staff. They also enjoyed trying on the replica armour.
The next location was the Roman bathhouse before we concluded our trip with a visit to the amphitheatre. We enjoyed our day exploring the Roman sites, learning and there was a lot of laughter and fun. A really great day out.
